Begin with a shore visit
The town identifies Onancock Wharf & Marina at 2 Market Street as its waterfront facility. For a simple visit, start with the permitted public areas and read the signs before approaching operational spaces. Let people using the marina go about their work.
A photograph can make the waterfront look like one open space, but dining areas, docks, launch facilities and parking may have different rules. Choose a place to pause without blocking a gangway, vehicle access or someone’s berth.
Look for the trading story
The Hopkins & Bro. Store is a useful landmark for thinking about the town’s connection to maritime commerce. Use Shore History’s information to distinguish the building’s history from its present-day use.

Some destination pages continue to describe regular Tangier departures, while the ferry operator’s website displays a suspension notice as checked on 24 September 2026. Get direct confirmation before making an island plan.
